Julie Hamer's work is about 'seeing' and 'feeling' the beauty of a subject, usually landscape. She attempts to sum up her feelings for a place of which she has been strongly inspired. Hamer tries to create abstract art which is an expression of visual rhythm through colour and form. It is an ateempt to express and achieve beauty rather than a literal representation of objects.
Her concerns, when producing art, are based strongly on the inner element rather than the outer, the spiritual rather than material.
Working in oils and acrylics on canvas, Julie likes the spontaneity of monotypes. She particularly enjoyes colour and will often apply intense or hard colour straight from the tube to try to capture the emotion. Recent p;aintings have involved a build-up of layers, bringing an almost collage effect to the result, before the artist adds her own intuitive response - which may involve reworking areas, whilst holding on to the originbal inspiration for the painting or print by incorporating artistic language to translate the scene.
Hamer strives to create work which is pure and balanced, where colour and form may have some effect on the viewer, leaving them feeling uplifted.
Hamer says:
'I find being creative as an artist is spiritual and can stir emotions. Morally it is a direct means to good, and I belive that art can strengthen the spirit. I firmly believe that colour and form can have an effect on the soul, whether in the artist or viewer.
I think that abstract art is an expression of the search for an ultimate relaity'.
